The MOMENTUM Collaborative Network: advancing microplastics and health research together

Building on the experience and insights gained in the MOMENTUM 1.0 and 2.0 projects, there is now a clear need for a sustainable way to advance the research field of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) and human health. To support this development in the longer term, the MOMENTUM Collaborative Network has been established. This network brings together stakeholders from universities, research organisations, public bodies, NGOs, and the private sector to strengthen and sustain collaboration in this rapidly evolving field.

In the emerging field of MNPs and human health, there is a need for more scientific evidence of:

  • the health effects of (long-term) exposure to humans.
  • the relationship between human behavior, exposure and risks.
  • possibilities to limit the risks with product innovation, policy or behavior.

The MOMENTUM Collaborative Network ensures that expertise, infrastructure, and data remain connected and accessible for long-term research and innovation. The network’s founding partners collaborated successfully in the MOMENTUM consortia, established by the Dutch ZonMw Microplastics & Health program.

A shared mission

The MOMENTUM Collaborative Network aims to:

  • Gather, develop, and share data and knowledge on MNPs and health through a joint, long-term research and innovation agenda;
  • Promote the scientific, societal, and economic impact of microplastics and health research through joint communication and outreach;
  • Share tools, methods, and access to equipment and approaches;
  • Collaborate with national and international partners in projects and initiatives on MNPs;
  • Provide scientific evidence and advice to support risk assessment and inform regulatory bodies;
  • Strengthen and increase the visibility of Dutch research and innovation in this field at the international level;
  • Provide training and opportunities for the next generation of researchers.

Working together for a healthier future

By connecting diverse expertise – from toxicology and analytical chemistry to policy, innovation, and risk communication – the MOMENTUM Collaborative Network fosters an integrated approach to understanding and mitigating the potential health effects of micro- and nanoplastics.

The network is open to representatives from all sectors, including universities, research institutes, consumer and non-governmental and non-profit organisations, government agencies, and companies.
