New ZonMw Knowledge Agenda on Microplastics and Health presented
On Monday 3 November, ZonMw chair Arfan Ikram presented the new Knowledge Agenda on Microplastics and Health to Bas Derks (Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport) and Bernou Boven (Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management). The agenda, in which five years of MOMENTUM research are summarised, outlines what is currently known about exposure to microplastics and their potential health effects, and where further research is urgently needed.
During the event, held at Bar Beton in The Hague, Emma Kasteel presented the main results of the MOMENTUM research. Humans are mainly exposed to microplastics through indoor air, followed by food and drinking water. These tiny particles have been detected throughout the human body. Laboratory studies suggest that they may affect cells, tissues, and organs, for instance by triggering inflammation, disrupting brain function, or interfering with embryonic development. However, as Arfan Ikram emphasized, caution is needed when translating laboratory findings to humans.
“This is truly pioneering work,” said Ikram. “Much more research is needed. At the same time, it is important that we already take steps to reduce exposure to micro- and nanoplastics, and that we foster dialogue between government, industry, environmental and consumer organisations, and researchers. This topic deserves more attention.”
That dialogue was central to the afternoon programme, chaired by Anouschka Laheij. Through a series of interactive sessions, participants explored questions such as how to reduce exposure, how to inform consumers, and how to connect scientific knowledge with practical measures.
The Knowledge Agenda on Microplastics and Health was developed with strong contributions from MOMENTUM researchers. Juliette Legler, Emma Kasteel, and June Kim were part of the scientific editorial board, and many other MOMENTUM scientists contributed to the content and synthesis of five years of research. The agenda builds on the outcomes of the MOMENTUM consortium, part of ZonMw’s Microplastics & Health programme, and provides an important foundation for continued collaboration through the MOMENTUM Collaborative Network.
