Stefan Kools, PhD, is researcher and leader of the Chemical Water Quality and Health team. Kools has more than 20 years of experience in the water sector, both as a scientific researcher and ecotoxicology advisor. He is an expert in emerging contaminants and new monitoring methods like bioassays, sensors and citizen science. He is fully acquainted with the European legislation, such as the EU Water Framework Directive and the Drinking Water Directive.

In the national context, he works for the drinking water utilities as a member of the Water Quality Advisory Committee. Internationally, he supports RIWA in the IAWR, plays an active role in the NORMAN network, and is a member of the International Water Association (IWA) and of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC). He was project member of NanoNextNL (nanomaterial) and studying microplastics in water since 2013 for the Joint Research Programme of the Dutch Drinking Water utilities (BTO 2013-2020).
