Associate prof. Remco Westerink (male, PhD, ERT) received his MSc in Biology (1997) and PhD in Neurotoxicology (2002) from Utrecht University (UU). He has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (University of Amsterdam) and the Department of Medical Physiology and Biophysics (University of Seville, Spain).
Since 2005, Dr. Westerink is heading the Neurotoxicology Research Group at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS, Utrecht University). He is past-President of the International Neurotoxicology Association (INA; 2017-2019) and Editor in Chief of NeuroToxicology (Elsevier) since 2017.
His research focusses on all aspects of neurotoxicology, with strong emphasis on in vitro methods and (dynamic) readouts for neuronal (dys)function to reduce the need for animal experiments. He has supervised 40 MSc and 8 PhD students who have successfully completed their studies, as well as 2 postdoctoral researchers.
Currently, he is supervising 2 MSc and 3 PhD students. Dr. Westerink authored over 100 scientific articles and book chapters, and has participated/is participating in numerous (inter)national projects, including the EU-funded projects ATHON, ENFIRO, ACROPOLIS, DENAMIC, ENDpoiNTs and TUBE, and the NC3R-funded CrackIt challenge (Neuratect) on in vitro (developmental) neurotoxicology. The total funding involved in Dr. Westerink’s projects since 2005 amounts to ~7M euro.
