Prof. dr. Frederik-Jan van Schooten – MU

Prof Van Schooten has over 30 years of senior management experience in life sciences research, academic education, heading departments and faculty management, public health policy, and valorisation of science. He published over 280 papers in peer-reviewed journals (H-index is 66) and obtained numerous grants for research. He is external reviewer of Dutch and foreign scientific programs. Over 15 M Euro in EU, government and charity research acquisition on: biomarkers of DNA damage and repair in lung carcinogenesis and atherosclerosis; volatile biomarkers in inflammatory lung and bowel disease; genetic susceptibility in lung cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, asthma, smoking and eating behaviour; chemoprevention by dietary nutrients; cancer risk assessment of ambient air pollutants.

He is teaching in Bachelor and Master educational programs in Molecular Life Sciences and supervise(s)d 43 PhD students. Member of the Dutch Health Council and its associated ad hoc committees. Main areas of scientific interests are in molecular mechanisms of mutagenesis/carcinogenesis in relation to dietary and environmental (prenatal) exposures; developing biomarkers for DNA damage and repair; genetic susceptibility for disease; chemical analysis of breath and search for its use in dietary prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.
