Dr. Alex Remels is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology within the institute of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism (NUTRIM) at Maastricht University (UM). His research is focused on the study of the molecular mechanisms underlying detrimental effects of airborne substances on epithelial cells that constitute the airways and lungs. These toxicants include cigarette smoke, emissions from novel tobacco products, particulate matter from different sources and microplastics. In the study of molecular mechanisms underlying toxicity his focus is primarily on the study of mitochondria.
