MOMENTUM research at SOT 2025 conference
A successful week for MOMENTUM at SOT 2025, this year’s annual meeting of the Society of Toxicology! Various MOMENTUM researchers presented their results at the conference in Orlando, Florida.
Emma Kasteel from Universiteit Utrecht and Irene Gosselink from Universiteit Maastricht were invited to share their perspectives on the toxicological impact of micro- and nanoplastics as early stage career scientists. Their session brought together women toxicologists to present pioneering research on microplastics, showcasing various new methodologies.
In her talk, Emma shared results of her MOMENTUM research on the toxic effects of different plastic polymers on the nervous system, including the movement of plastic particles through the blood-brain barrier. Irene presented results from her project in which she cultured lung cells in an air-liquid interface model to assess the toxicity of plastic particles on these cells.

MOMENTUM coordinator Juliette Legler, who received the Eurotox Lecture Award in 2024, gave a lecture on endocrine disruptors and microplastics. In her presentation, she talked about the MOMENTUM consortium and emphasized the importance of forging connections between disciplines and stakeholders to develop innovative solutions to scientific challenges.
